Balearic environmental organisation GOB, yesterday claimed that 80 per cent of mobile telephone masts in Majorca are illegal. As the debate rages about the health hazards the antennas, some claim, pose, GOB claims that the large majority of masts in Majorca have been erected without the required permission. GOB is urging the local government to behave responsibly considering that there are as yet no conclusive studies about the health risk posed by mobile telephone masts and to therefore demand that all the required rules and regulations are complied with by the telephone companies. The Insular Council of Majorca also has an important role to play as its planning department is responsible for overseeing the installation of antenna in rural areas. GOB claims that the companies installing the masts normally contact the local residents and offer them money, sometimes as much as four million pesetas to install a telephone mast which may pose a health risk to the community. GOB launched an awareness campaign a few days ago following four cases of cancer detected at a school close to a telephone antenna on the mainland. mc.mdbUbitel.es
