The government has been swamped with more than 14'600 demands for compensation from individuals, whose property was damaged during the November storms. But although the demands come to 101.5 million euros, the Balearic government is convinced that the 47.5 million euros it has earmarked for compensation will be sufficient. A government spokesman yesterday affirmed that many of the claims had been padded, and others did not fall within the government's criteria. However, if the 47.5 million euros is not sufficient, the amount will be increased, minister Antoni Garcias said yesterday. Payouts are due to start in May. In Alcudia alone, land owners are demanding 17.29 million euros.
