Nine people, including a seven-year-old girl, were injured yesterday in a five-car pile up along the treacherous Llucmajor road. Three of the victims, including the young girl, were seriously hurt. The accident happened at 2.30 pm when two vehicles collided as one of the drivers tried to avoid a motorcyclist. All of the injured, two of whom are believed to be British, were taken to hospitals and clinics across Palma with the emergency and security services mounting a huge operation. A fleet of ambulances and a number of police units rushed to scene, at first fearing the worst. Police sources said at the scene that it was a miracle that no lives were lost. The accident caused long tail backs and it took the emergency services the best part of an hour to clear the road and re-establish normal traffic.
