The Balearic ministry of the environment has written to the central ministry, seeking official confirmation that sand is being extracted from the sea bed off Cape Salines to be deposited on storm-hit beaches in the north of the island.
The local ministry said that Cape Salines is a specially protected area because of the number of birds in the area, and it fears that dredging for sand could disturb them. The ministry also says that the area where the sand is to be deposted, from Cape Formentor to Cape Farrutx, is classified as an area of interest, and any work there should be communicated to the European Commission. A copy of its letter has been sent to the European Commission.
