Palma serious crime and fraud squad have swooped and arrested a suspected member of the Italian mafia. Santo Maesano is apparently wanted in Italy in connection with murder, drug trafficking and his relationship with the mafia. Palma police chief sources said that the Italian was arrested on Monday in the area of Santa Catalina in Palma. He was carrying false Italian identification papers, a fake driving licence and 12'800 euros in cash. The Palma investigation was launched in March once he had been located on the island. As the investigation progressed, members of the Italian fraud squad travelled to the island to help their Majorcan counterparts. In Italy there is at least one search and arrest warrant outstanding on Maesano and the Italian authorities will now apply for his extradition to stand trial.
