Residents of the Camino Can Gaià and Calle Rodrigo de Triana area of Portocolom have expressed concern because according to their information, there have been 23 cases of cancer in the neighbourhood since Amena set up two mobile telephone antennae 150 metres apart two and a half years ago. The neighbours are convinced that there is a connection, as the cases started to increase after the second antenna was installed. One elderly woman said she had forbidden her grand-children to visit her because she was afraid something may happen to them. The cases of cancer are not confined to brain tumours but include lung and breast cancer. The neighbours have now decided to take action and have started talks with the town council. They are also collecting signatures for a petition. The neighbours also claim that the antennae cause other physical effects such as headaches, depression, insomnia and thyroid problems. A petition with 500 signatures calling for the removal of the antennae has been handed to the Felanitx council. Now more signatures are being collected for a petition to the Balearic health ministry. One of the antennae is illegal and the council is looking into the matter.
