Several towns and villages across the island suffered blackouts yesterday morning, when a fault developed in the new power station at Son Reus. The system, installed in July, broke down at 10.18am. In order to prevent further breakdowns and speed up repairs, GESA-ENDESA disconnected various lines, which led to the blackout. A company spokesman said that the areas affected were all on the outskirts of towns such as Palma, Inca, Sa Pobla, Pollença, Marratxi, Santanyi and Alcudia. But in Palma, the blackouts also affected the Avenidas and the Soller train, which was stranded in Calle Balmes, causing traffic jams. There were also traffic jams at the Son Castelló industrial estate. Service was restored in most areas shortly before 11am.
