The countdown has started to one of the most popular fiestas on the island, the wine harvest festival of Binissalem which will be held from September 21 to 29. Although there will be events on every day of the week, the days to mark in your diary are September 26, 28 and 29. The 26th is when the whole town is invited to a huge dish of fideus de vermar, a noodles and lamb dish which was once the staple of the grape pickers. It is served on the outskirts of Binissalem, and you have to take along your own plate and spoon. There will be a parade of floats on themes related to wine and grapes on the 28th, but the main events will take place on the 29th. Grapes will be pressed in the traditional manner on the church steps, there will be a competition for the biggest bunch of grapes, exhibitions of human towers, music, dancing and free wine.
