The German President, Johannes Rau, will pay an official visit to Majorca on November 13. It will be the first official visit by a German head of state. According to Mallorca Magazin, the Grup Serra's weekly German magazine, Rau will start a state visit to Spain on November 11, going first of all to Madrid, accompanied by foreign minister Joschka Fischer. The official agenda of the visit is due to be published next week. Chancellor Helmut Schmidt spent a holiday in Formentor in 1980; Helmut Kohl attended a European Summit in Formentor in 1995 and Gerhard Schröder spent a holiday here in 2000. Many presidents of the regions and ministers have also visited the island. Photographs of defence minister Rudolf Scharping at a local pool with his girl friend made headline news in Germany.
