Maria Crespo, the president of EMAYA, announced a new rubbish collection service in La Lonja, which will come into force on Friday, October 18. The system has been worked out by the city council in collaboration with residents and bar and restaurant owners in the area, who want to put an end to the problem caused by smelly rubbish containers in the centre of Palma's night life. The unsightly containers will be removed from the area between Paseo Sagrera, Antoni Maura, Plaza Reina, Guillem Mesquida, Forn de la Gloria, Drassana and Consolat and there will be three collection points only, in Drassana, Plaza Reina-corner Antoni Maura and the Paseo Sagrera, opposite the Lonja. There will be specific collection times for residents and bar and restaurant owners. Outside these times, the collection points will be closed. The times for residents are between 8 and 11pm, and for bars between 11.30pm and midnight in Drassana, 0.30 and 2am in Plaza Reina and 2 to 2.30pm in Paseo Sagrera. EMAYA will be sending letters to everyone living in the area, explaining the new scheme.
