British Airways announced yesterday that from next February, the airline will start operating regular flights to the island from the UK to try and help boost winter tourism. The Insular Council of Minorca, the Minorcan hotel Association, the Tourist Board and the Balearic Association of Travel Agents have been locked in talks with British Airways in an attempt to give low season tourism extra emphasis but also improve communications between the UK and Minorca. The Minorca Insular Council and the hotel sector are also working on a project to boost transport services in Minorca. The island's public transport system is far from adequate and fails to meet the needs of the tourist sector, but the car hire industry is also unable to meet demand and the local authorities want to plug the gap in public and private transport for holiday makers while promoting winter tourism which will focus very much on the island's history and culture.
