ONE man and two women needed treatment for smoke intoxication yesterday, after a fire broke out in a flat in the Pere Garau area.
A sudden blackout had left a first floor flat in Calle Francisco Manuel de Herreros in the dark at about 3.30pm and the owner, a woman aged about 60, tried to repair the fault. She then smelt burning and when she went into one of the rooms, she found it on fire.
Local and National Police officers, firmen and ambulances rushed to the scene, and an EMAYA street cleaning tanker which was in the area was enlisted.
It took about 45 minutes to extinguish the fire. The flat owner and two other occupants of the building needed treatment for smoke inhalation, but did not need hospital treatment. The room where the fire broke out was totally destroyed and there was considerable damage to the rest of the flat. Although a complete investigation has to be made, it is believed the fire was caused by a short circuit.
