THIS weekend a host of stars and celebrities will start arriving in Palma from the UK to play in the fifth Robert Winsor Charity Golf tournament.
Winsor will actually be hosting his 13th tournament this year, having organised eight in Britain before moving to Majorca, and the grand event to raise money for sunshine coaches, electric wheelchairs and necessities for the handicapped and under privileged children in the Balearics, starts on Monday night with the welcome dinner at Royal Bendinat Golf Club which, as usual, is not only hosting the two-days of celebrity golf, but covering all the green fees and costs. This year the fund raising was kicked off with the donation of 10.000 euros by the Santa Ponsa Country Club, which hosts the Gala Prize Auction and Cabaret, but the army of celebrities who have donated their services to the causes are bound to take Winsor a step further to the one million pound mark. In the UK, his tournaments raised £550.000 for the handicapped, most of the money going on specialist wheelchairs. In Majorca, his past four events have raised £300.000 making a grand total of £850.000 and this year's charity auction features everything from a trip for four in a private jet to Ibiza with lunch to Claudia Schiffer's first putter and a signed photo wishing good golf and good luck with the supermodel's putter, four VIP tickets, given by Jasper Carrot who is unable to play this year, to go to Elstree Studios for the recording of Who Wants to be a Millionaire, a signed polo shirt by rock band OASIS and a VIP entry to the British Grand Prix. Robert Winsor said yesterday that the charity now over shadows the golf, explaining that more and more people are wanting to make donations without even getting involved in the tournament “so many people realise the work that is being done for the needy children and that is what is important.” A number of celebritities will be returning, having played in all four of the previous tournaments while there will be some new faces on the green.
Celebrities making their debuts In Majorca include actor Gareth Hunt who first shot to fame on Doctor Who and went to star in Upstairs Downstairs and then The New Avengers, he was also the Nescafe man for many years. Lance Percival star of numerous Carry On films and This Was The Week That Was, and recently voted the Best After Dinner Speaker, will also be playing, so too will former Davis Cup tennis captain David Lloyd who won the Wimbledon pairs with his brother John. Other golfing celebrities include Mike England, Allan Ball, Robert Powell, Jimmy Hill who played two years ago, Johnny Moore. Kenny Lynch, Joe Goodman and Jess Conrad. Peter Stringfellow will be lending his full support, as usual and his girlfriend, singer Lucy Carr, will be headlining the cabaret.
Top comedian Stan Boardman will also be returning, but definitely not for the golf, as he proved last year, he is much better sticking to humour!
