THIS weekend Majorca will be able to enjoy a whole new experience in family fun.
Friday marks the opening of Palma's new OCIMAX cinema and entertainment complex in Cas Capiscol, opposite the Carrefour hypermarket in General Riera, and the dawn of a new era in entertainment. Around 20 million euros has been spent on the development which will include 15 cinemas, one of which will house the biggest screen in the Balearics and another will be dedicated to showing original version films, the bulk of which are expected to be in English, Spain's second largest ten-pin bowling alley with 26 lanes, including special bowling facilities for small children, a broad selection of quality restaurants serving a variety of different styles, an amusement arcade, nursery and two special cinema VIP areas with their own private entrances and bar service. The main highlight of the complex is the Cinema-70 giant screen which will be showing high-definition 3-D documentaries.
The large format movie screen means maximum viewing from all areas of the hall accompanied by digital sound and to demonstrate the unique Cinemax-70, the OCIMAX complex will be screening “The Mysteries of Eygpt” co-produced by National Geographic and Destination Cinema. The film is in fact National Geographic's first big-screen adventure production starring Omar Sharif as an Egyptian uncle providing the narrative, guiding the audience round the pyramids, up the Nile and showing off the treasures of the Pharoes. The film, which features a series of spectacular shots of the pyramids and the Sphynx from the ground and from the air, also shows how the pyramids were built and how Tutankhamun's body was prepared for burial and unveils a host of secrets about the world's oldest civilization. The Cinemax-70 screen, which covers an area of 16 by 11.5 metres, will also be showing “Ultimate X-Movie,” a thrill-a-minute extreme sports film to demonstrate the wonders of the Cinemax-70 screen and how it uses the very latest entertainment technology The 15 cinema halls will seat between 130 and 360 people in maximum comfort with the complex housing a total of 3'000 cinema seats.
There will also be free parking for 800 vehicles.
