MAYOR of Calvia, Carlos Delgado, and the president of “Sa Nostra”, Llorenç Huguet, signed an agreement yesterday, to promote road safety in schools.
Teaching youngsters to respect the highway code and to look after themselves when out and about, crossing busy roads, is part of the mission recently given to ten “Teaching Policemen” as a pilot project in Calvia.

The new school “staff” will address these key safety issues, with some 3'400 pupils across the municipality.
According to Calvia Town Council, the agreement is the result “of the clear decision of both parties to focus on methods of prevention” in conduct of youngsters on the roads.

For several years now, Local Police have given educational classes on highway education at the different school centres in the district. This year, the figures of the “Teaching Policemen” have been introduced as a pilot scheme. Each policeman will be assigned to a school centre on a permanent basis and funds from “Sa Nostra” will enable the purchase of teaching aids to promote the theme of road safety as a subject worthy of independent study.

The “Teaching Policemen” will liaise with Parent Teachers Associations and Civil Defence groups to address issues with children on other subjects deemed crucial to overall education, such as the dangers of drugs and the use of first aid.
