WHILE the clean-up operation after Wednesday night's earthquake continued in some parts of the Balearics yesterday, in particular boat yards and marinas in the south of Majorca and Minorca, a team of local volunteers flew out to Algeria. Three highly trained members from the Balearic Civil Protection Department and the Palma fire service are part of the Spanish team being sent out to help the search and rescue operation in Algeria. Balearic government sources said yesterday that the Spanish team, including the three members from the Balearics, flew out yesterday on board three Spanish Air Force Hercules transport planes. Balearic university experts have explained that the reason the quake was strong in the Balearics was because the epicentre was under the sea and the Balearics was hit by the quake's seismic waves. In fact, university experts said that it was really a seaquake which affected the Balearics as opposed to the earthquake which struck Algeria.
No damage was caused on land, the main damage was caused by the sudden and very sharp rise and fall of the sea levels.
During the immediate few hours following the main quake on Wednesday night, 34 small seismic movements were picked up at the university, but they were so small, they were not felt by the public.
