AT 6.30pm last night the leader of the Partido Popular in Calvia, Carlos Delgado, called his candidates together for the first of a round of meetings to discuss the pact which has been agreed with the Majorca Unionist party which will give the Partido Popular control of the local council for the next four years. Although no official, public announcement is expected until today, sources for both the Partido Popular and the UM confirmed yesterday evening that Carlos Delgado will be the new mayor of Calvia and leader of a Partido Popular-controlled the local council, ending two decades of PSOE socialist rule.Margarita Najera, the former mayor who resigned yesterday morning, battled throughout the day to reach a deal with the Majorca Unionist party and its leader Isidre Cañellas, but after a week of intense meetings, the UM, with its two vital council seats, has, as suspected, pledged its backing to the Partido Popular. Both parties have agreed on each one's responsibilities, obviously with the PP being largely responsible for Calvia, while the UM's councillors will represent Capdellà and Paguera, the rest of the municipalities will be represented by PP councillors. Isidre Cañellas, UM party leader and expected to be confirmed as the deputy mayor today said yesterday evening that full details of the pact and the new council will be revealed today with the new councillors being sworn in tomorrow at mid day. He also denied that his decision to reject the offer from the PSOE socialist party had any relation with the investigation by the anti-corruption services into alleged charges being brought against Margarita Najerá. PP and UM sources said yesterday that, quite simply, what the electorate showed this time around was that they wanted a change in Calvia.
Najerá and the PSOE socialist party increased her majority at the last local elections four years ago, but Cañellas, who said that his decision would be made in the best interests of the people of Calvia, could not ignore the massive swing away from the socialists at this year's elections.

Top job for British resident Mentink

BRITISH resident Kate Mentink will tomorrow be sworn in as the new Calvia Councillor for Tourism and European Affair.
Last night she said “setting up the European Affairs department, responsible for external affairs and all issues involving the foreign community, will not to be too difficult as it does not exist, however tourism, virtually ignored over the past few years, poses a chalenge. But Carlos (Delgado) has just made it clear to us that he is a hard woking person, and expects us to work hard, if not even harder.”
