SPOKESMAN for the Majorcan Socialist Party (PSM) on Palma City Council, Pere Muñoz, voiced criticism yesterday of the “lack of action” by the ruling government team (Partido Popular) on the issue of prostitution.

Muñoz claimed that the PP had still not yet abided by an agreement made in February this year. Following urgent prompting from the PSM, the government team had promised to collaborate with other institutions to introduce reform measures to curb prostitution in the city.

Muñoz was anxious to convey the need to act promptly, because as has often been the case in the past, prostitution “moves” its base to Puerta de San Antonio and up as far as the Porta des Camp at the bottom of the Avenidas when the tourist season has come to an end. The influx threatens the “safety” of the area, and thrives in the “absence” of police.

The PSM spokesman went on to stress the need to combat organised mafia gangs who put immigrant women in need of money out on missions of prostitution. Action is required and would benefit not only the police, but also the women themselves who need attention from social welfare departments to stop them falling even further into the world of organised crime and prostitution.

Not only was Muñoz keen to see preventative measures taken to discourage prostitution but also the introduction of some basic health guidelines to encourage “safe sex”, not just amongst the prostitute community but amongst the community at large. He felt that the government was failing to recognise that this sensitive issue had society-wide repercussions in terms of health and safety.
