Staff reporter TEMPERATURES are going to plummet over the next 48 hours, bringing snow to the peaks of Majorca. The weather warning was issued yesterday by Agustín Jansá, director of the Balearic met. office in Palma. However, it is not all bad news - he said that temperatures will rise again this weekend.


In the meantime, temperatures will start falling “significantly” today and Agustín Jansá warned that the drop over the next 48 hours could be as sharp as between three and five degrees.

Overnight yesterday, between 7.5 and 12.2 litres of rain fell per square metre in Palma and Mahon and more torrential rain and storms are expected today accompanied by hail, which could turn to snow above 1'100 metres tomorrow.

The worst of today's weather is forecast to hit the region this afternoon accompanied by moderate to strong north, north westerly winds.
Jansá said that this cold snap and strong northerly winds will continue until Friday, after which the weather should improve for the weekend.
After the hottest and driest October for 30 years, the extended summer in the Balearics has come to sudden end with the emergency services keeping a close eye on the situation.
