Staff reporter A TOTAL of 16'432 people, some residents in Majorca and other tourists, visited the two temporary tourist information offices that Palma City Council erected in Parc de la Mar and Plaza Mayor in Palma during August and September.

The aim of the two stands focussed on providing visitors with as much information as possible on the different areas and services on the island during the summer seasons.

During a conference ahead of the Tecnoturistica Trade and Tourism Show, the Majorcan director of tourist information, Josep Bestard, highlighted that these exhibitions received an “excellent response”. The stand at the Parc de la Mar received the most vistors, 9'554 in total (5'758 in August and 3'796 in September), whilst the stand at Plaza Mayor welcomed 6'788 people who were seeking information about Majorca (3'556 in August and 3'232 in September).

In addition, Bestard explained that a new tourist information website www.infomallorca.net received a total of 45'191 visitors from May to November, and had an average of 258 daily visits.

October was the busiest month for the website (a total of 11'419 visits), while November registered the least number of users (5'572 for the first half of the month).

An estimated 40% of people visting the website registered but did not reveal their nationality, 28% did not register, 16% were people who worked in America, 7% came from Spain, 2% from Germany and 1% from the UK, Switzerland, Austria, Holand and Sweden.

The Majorcan Director is certain that the number of visitors to the website will keep on growing, owing to the help from search engines and online tourist information offices.

Bestard said that “we are living in an continually evolving world where the habits of tourists are changing, whereby they are using the internet more and more often to seek information and to make hotel reservations,” and for these reasons it is imperative to take advantage of these technologies and to offer tourists more choice of where they can get information and make bookings.

The director said that during the Trade and Tourism Show, that will take place from November 17 to 20 at the Son Sant Joan Palma Airport, there will be two computers available for people to visit the online tourist information office. It is hoped that this will help promote it “as the site that has all the necessary information available for people to be able to organise their holiday. At the same time we will be promoting Majorca as a top tourist destination, in the face of the competition from other countries” he added.
