Road closures

POLLENSA
LOCAL police in Pollensa have set up traffic redirection to accommodate the Pollensa craft fair. The re-routing will be in place today and tomorrow. Via Argentina, Via Pollentia, Claustro del Convento and surrounding streets Calles Bartomeu Aloy and Cecili Metel will remain closed to traffic.

Parking spaces will be available in Sor Flor Ricomana, the Badia de Pollença road, and the old Alcudia road, as well as at the municipal sports stadium in calle Cecili Metel.

This is the limit

LLUCMAJOR
THE Town Council in Llucmajor has approved a series of limitations on the amount of rubbish for which it is prepared to take responsibility. During the course of this year, the municipal waste collection service has witnessed a 35 percent rise in the quantity of bulky items such as old furniture, household electric goods, scrap iron and junk; as well as bush and tree cuttings from roadside verges which are periodically stripped by machine, all of which need special collection.

The Council has agreed that this service will in future only be available for individuals and not companies, and that taxes should be adjusted so that people who don't abuse the service pay less.

K Ecologist protest

SINEU
THE ecological watchdog in the Balearics, GOB, has presented legal objections to the Town Council of Sineu related to the excavation of the Son Corb quarry. Because the area is a rural enclave, the conservationist group says that the earth moving, transportation by heavy plant vehicles and the use of explosives, is detrimental to the Environment.

GOB has also taken its cause to the Island's Planning Committee, claiming that the quarry project is having a damaging effect on the Environment, is causing a nuisance to local people, and is contravening different by-laws.

Illegal construction

SOLLER
AN illegal construction in an olive grove in Barranc de Biniaraix has been brought to a halt this week by the Council of Majorca following a legal complaint brought before the Council's Environment and Nature department.

The handling of the matter has been passed to the Heritage department because the works in questions were underway in an area of protected Special Natural Interest (ANEI).

Months ago, walkers and local people in the area of Barranc de Biniaraix noticed the construction of a “second floor” on top of a traditional shelter in the olive grove, and the transportation of construction materials with a heavy vehicle which was also damaging the historic country route.

In spite of the evidence of unauthorised building, no official condemnation was brought before the local Town Council and it was the Council of Majorca who brought proceedings to a halt when it became aware of the gravity of the situation.

Fair security

INCA
THE celebration of the Island's largest agricultural and craft fair, Dijous Bo which takes place this coming Thursday in Inca, has meant plenty of extra work for local police. Preparations include extra patrols and security on the night before the fair when people traditionally go “out on the town”. Car parking will be available in Es Cos, Son Amonda, Crist Rei and at the Sports stadium.

New web site

MARIA DE LA SALUT
A plus for locals in Maria de la Salut is that the Town Council has now got a new web site. Anyone can access www.ajmariadelasalut.net on the Internet.

Top hospital

MANACOR
RECENT accolades awarded to Manacor Hospital, its staff and managing director Antoni Mesquida, have not gone to their heads. “Having a prize for quality is one thing” said Mesquida, “but it's important not to lose perspective, as the greatest reward of all is that the hospital is well used. We need to make sure we keep doing our best for the people in the district”. The director said that it would now be beneficial if Manacor Planning Ordenances could bear in mind that in the future, the hospital and the services it provides may need to extend, an option which was not taken into account in original planning.
