BALEARIC tourism “is on the road to recovery” after several years in which the number of visitors to the islands went down, according to local tourism chief Joan Flaquer, speaking at the opening of the Tecnoturística fair at the airport yesterday.

The fair, which will remain open until Sunday, covers an area of 22'500 square metres in four huge marquees, and there are nearly 600 stands. It is being held for the first time in four years, but Flaquer said it was an indispensible event, and was now back on schedule to be held every two years. Flaquer said that the celebration of the 11th edition of the fair would help professionals and tourism officials continue to be leaders in the field. Commenting on figures for transit at Son Sant Joan airport, the tourism chief said “they were not all that bad in May, nor were they all that good in October.” The figures show that the number of passengers increased by 16 percent in October and six percent in the first ten months of the year.
