News Desk THE Council of Majorca is granting over 30'000 euros for an environmental project that intends to hand out rubbish bags to all drivers, hikers and sailors in the Balearic Islands, in order to reduce the amount of rubbish that continues to increase year after year.

The aim of this campaign is to reduce the amount of rubbish that is found in alarming quantities on the roads, in the sea and in the mountains within the Balearic Islands.

The rubbish bags have been specially designed so that they are convenient for use in cars, boats and in backpacks.
The campaign was created by the Department for the Environment and Nature at the Council of Majorca and goes under the motto “I love the environment”. Even though the signs and notices for the rubbish bags and rubbish bins will all be in catalan, Munar states that foreign tourists will still understand thanks to the informative pictures that will be found on the notices.

Rubbish bags will be placed in petrol stations throughout the islands and at all the MOT centres, said the President of the Council, Maria Antonia Munar.

For the yachting industry, special rubbish bags will be delivered to all the yacht clubs. Additional rubbish bags will be delivered to hiking groups, specialist hiking shops and all refuge centres in the mountains.

These “recylcable, easy to use and practical” bags will be free of charge for all residents, said Munar.“Residents will therefore have no excuses for dropping litter”, she added.

It is important to make residents more aware about the importance of protecting the environment, said the councillor for the Environment at the Council of Majorca, Miquel Angel Borrás. This seems evident given the amount of rubbish that is in fact collected from the roads each year.

In Majorca alone 40 tonnes of rubbish was found on the roads last year, as well as an astonishing 130 tonnes of rubbish in the sea.
Out of the 60'000 bags that have been manufactured, there are two different types; one type is a large plastic bag that has a drawstring for use by yachtspeople and hikers; other is more smaller, made from material, and to be used by drivers.
