Staff Reporter THE socialist opposition on the Calvia town council is once again demanding the “immediate resignation” of Mayor Carlos Delgado, for alleged “misuse of justice,” a reference to the lawsuits brought against former socialist Mayor Margarita Nájera.

In a written statement, the PSOE (Spanish Socialist Workers Party) referred to the last court ruling which filed the case and “criticised the Mayor for taking to court matters which were a question of political debate.” According to the PSOE, this “confirms that Delgado used the justice system to falsely accuse Margarita Nájera and in this way win press headlines which discredited her politically.” In the statement, party spokesman Antoni Manchado accused Carlos Delgado of “manipulating our judicial system for electoral gain.” He added that “a person capable of something like that cannot continue to be Mayor, not of Calvia nor any other municipality; anyone who practices anti-democratic strategies to achieve power is unworthy of representing a single citizen.” Margarita Najera ruled Calvia for 12 years but was ousted at the last local elections by Carlos Delgado.
