SENDING a European Union force to Somalia is going to top the agenda at next month's two-day summit of European Union Defence Ministers in Palma.
Spain's Defence Minister,. Carme Chacon, yesterday met the new EU Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Chief, Catherine Ashton, for talks in Brussels and Chacon revealed Spain's intention, as President of the European Union, to form a multi-state team for deployment to Somalia in May to provide extra support to a transitional government and also train a 2'000 strong Somali force to mount a land-based crack down on piracy.

Spain's initial plan is to send at least 100 European Union military and security instructors to Africa to train the Somali force in neighbouring Uganda.

Chacon, however, did not reveal now many instructors Spain is prepared to commit to the training operation.
