Palma.—Some 4'000 people attended the service of inauguration of the new bishop of Majorca, Xavier Salines at Palma Cathedral yesterday morning.
25 bishops and cardinals participated in the event which was also attended by a host of local dignitaries including the President of the Balearics, Jose Ramon Bauza, President of the Council of Majorca, Maria Salom and the mayor of Palma, Mateu Isern.

The special mass ended with a message from Pope Benedict XVI who sent his blessings to the new Bishop.
In his sermon of acceptance, the Bishop advised the government to do more to help families. “Helping families is the biggest service one can do today because families are the hope and future of society.” Salines also said that the Majorcan diocese “is facing great social and cultural changes which pose big challenges for the church.” But he pledged the church's full support for the community and Salines offered his full cooperation in working for the common good of the general public.

Xavier Salines was born in Valencia on January 23, 1948 and replaces Jesus Mergui who has been transferred to the diocese of Orihuela in Alicante.
