Palma—Almost a third of local students leave school early with little or no qualifications, according to a report released yesterday.
The worrying statistic comes at a time when thousands of young people are leaving Spain in search of employment in other European Union countries.
The European Union has called on Spain to tackle this problem and wants to see the figure drop to 15 percent in Spain by 2020. “It is very alarming that almost one out of every three pupils are leaving school early and going into the working environment with no qualifications at all.” said one teacher yesterday.

Trade unions have said that the problems will get even worse as a result of the spending cuts which are being introduced by the Spanish government. Class sizes are set to increase even further and there is already an important shortage of teachers.
