Palma.—The President of the Balearics Jose Ramon Bauza, said yesterday that, in the long term, his government may consider integrating public and private medical records in order to reduce the need for duplicated records which would save money and also create a more unified and effective health service.

Bauza informed the Balearic Minister for Health and Welfare, Marti Sansaloni, of his plans last week during a meeting to discuss the future of the local health service.

Cross over
Buaza denied that the government is planning on privatising the Balearic Ib-salut national health service although he does want to integrate public and private medical records so that both sectors have immediate access to the same patient information.

At the moment, there is next to no cross over of medical information which in many cases means that someone from the private sector, needing treatment in the public sector, will have to go through two sets of medical examinations with both groups collating their own medical records.

However, Bauza believes that by having a single, integrated medical data base not only will time and money be saved, both the public and private sectors will be able to provide a quicker and more efficient service.

Best formula
Bauza added that such a scheme will also enable both sectors to make the maximum use of their resources.
For the moment, no further action is going to be taken until a series of studies have been carried out to identify the best formula for an integrated system.
