Congressman Joan Baldovi yesterday proposed that a white paper be drawn up declaring all flights between the mainland and the Balearics as a public service which would therefore guarantee regular flight services and also cap air fares at reasonable rates.

In the wake of the collapse of Spanair some of the airlines have cashed in by more than doubling their fares and consumer groups and politicians are furious over the airline industry's response. He said that the cost of some flights from Palma to Madrid have been bumped up to 700 euros.
