Petra.—At the instigation of the Association of Friends of Friar Juniper Serra, the Petra-born Franciscan monk who founded the California missions, the Council of Majorca is to declare 2013 as the year of Friar Juniper Serra.

Maria Salom , the President of the Council of Majorca was in Petra yesterday to meet with the Association, chaired by the former United States consular agent to the Balearics, Bartomeu Bestard. Salom, who has been named an honorary member of the Association, said that by paying tribute to Friar Juniper Serra through naming a year after him, it affords the historic figure a high public profile, encouraging interest in the importance he played in the founding of what is today the modern state of California. The missions he established later flourished into the cities of Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Diego and Sacramento. The Council of Majorca has set up an official committee to organise celebrations and activities in honour of the 300th anniversary of Friar Juniper Serra's birth, as well as an honorary committee representing academics, politicians and members of religious orders. Salomlater visited the Friar Juniper Serra museum.
