Palma.—Around 1'000 people took part yesterday in a protest march against the Balearic government's planned closure of Juan March hospital in Palma, the regional Socialist party (PSIB) reported.

Walkers gathered in the main square in Bunyola at around 11.30am before setting off en masse, their final destination being the main entrance of the hospital itself. According to a Workers Commission (CCOO) representative, around 200 workers at the Juan March hospital have been staging a sit-in protest on the premises since last Monday as a sign of their rejection of the closure which the government has described as part of its plans to “balance the economy”. Staff at the hospital are also angry that they have not been offered “any explanation at all” by the Balearic authorities.

Workers have decided that within the next few days, they are to demand the resignation of the management of “Gesma”, (Majorca's Health Management Board) because it has allegedly “done nothing” to stop the closure of both the Juan March and the General Hospital in Palma.
