Palma.—The Council of Majorca is to hire out the gardens and buildings of the Raixa estate for weddings and private parties. Costs will range from between 300 and 2'000 euros, according to what part of the estate clients want to pay for, Minister for the President's office Jaume Juan confirmed yesterday.

The Council will also be charging the public for visits to the estate at a rate which will vary from 7 euros for adults to free entrance for special needs groups such as the retired, the unemployed and the handicapped, as well as teaching staff who are accompanying school children.

Joan said that the Council is fine-tuning charges and the terms and conditions of hire. He added that the estate and its buildings can only be hired for purposes which are compatible with the facilities and which will not damage the environment.

The Council calculates that 50'000 people a year visit Raixa which could bring in income of some 350'000 euros annually.
The hiring arrangement, said Joan, will help find the extra money to cover the 410'000 euros that is needed for maintenance costs every year. “If there is any money left over at the end of the day,” he said, it will be reinvested in the estate.
The Council aims to open the premises at the end of the summer and is even considering having the opening coincide with Majorca Day.
At the moment, the finishing touches are being put to two public exhibition areas on the estate, one dedicated to the era when it was the home of Cardinal Despuig and the second devoted to the heritage of the Tramuntana mountains.
