Palma.— In the wake of news that the property and grounds of Raixa estate can be hired by the public for private parties and weddings, Maria Salom, the President of the Council of Majorca said yesterday that as an island authority, the Council is not equipped to organise celebratory events so a contract for the management of such occasions is being put out to public tender.

Salom said that it will be some months before a private firm is selected for the work and before administration details can be fine-tuned. Meanwhile, the Council is prepared to permit public visits to the buildings and gardens at Raixa but no private parties, filming and photography shoots can be applied for as yet.

Asked how much the contract for private management is worth, Salom said it had not quite been decided but it would have to be a sum, she said, that included the maintenance costs of the estate which are calculated at around 400'000 euros a year.

Salom said that the entrance prices for the public which were approved yesterday had been drafted up a year ago by the previous Socialist government.
