Palma.—The company which eventually signs a contract to provide food and drink services for private parties and weddings at the Raixa country estate must make sure it has all the necessary certificates and licences for working with the public, the restaurateurs' sector of the Balearic Business Confederation (CAEB) said yesterday.

Restaurateur sector head Pilar Carbonell said that there had been initial surprise when the Council of Majorca announced that it was going to hire out the buildings and gardens of the government-owned country estate for private parties. “But when the Council explained that it was going to put a bid out to public tender for events management then that was more understandable,” Carbonell added, claiming there was a surplus of companies on Majorca offering food and beverage services management.

Her views were echoed by Juan Cabrera, a leading figure in the Balearic small to medium-sized business association. He said that it was “normal” that the Council of Majorca should farm out event management at Raixa to a private firm but what was absolutely essential was that the firm who took up the contract should have all the correct certificates and permits for serving the public. “It's the Council of Majorca's responsibility to make sure that whoever applies for the contract is fit to provide a proper standard of service,” he said.
