Palma.— Complaints by residents to the municipal cleaning company in Palma, Emaya, about inadequate rubbish collection services had been coming thick and fast with the result that the firm has been obliged to provide more conventional rubbish containers. The move is designed to partially substitute the pneumatically powered variety which dispense waste through an underground system. Emaya will also need to increase the number of collections.

Last Wednesday, underground channelling linking the dispensing system at Porta des Camp broke down meaning that 360 underground rubbish dispensing points were left unusable. Emaya triggered an emergency response which consisted of providing 162 conventional rubbish containers. Jesús Gonzalez, the President of Palma's Federation of Neighbourhood Associations confirmed that complaints had been sent to Emaya because many residents and traders had got in touch with the Federation. A case in point was concerns that at the entrance to a primary school children were beginning to play with rubbish bags which had been left on the pavement because householders had no room to put them in the overfull containers. Emaya subsequently responded to the residents' Association, said Gonzalez saying they would bring in an emergency supply of containers and increase collection times. Defending his corner yesterday was Andreu Garau, the President of Emaya who pointed to how quickly the company responded after being made aware of neighbourhood complaints. He said that as in the meantime people can use the pneumatic bins at any time of the day, there are bound to be periods when bags are lying around.
