Palma.—The summer season will mean there will be 1'700 extra temporary jobs in the Balearics, largely in the hostelry, restaurateur and airport sectors, staff agency Adecco predicted yesterday.

The upturn in employment the agency said, means that there is 30 percent more temporary work in the summer than there is at other times of the year.
Adecco said that the positions most in demand during the tourist season so far as hotels are concerned are cooks, waiters, chambermaids, and receptionists with knowledge of languages. Meanwhile, travel agents, tourist guides and entertainment monitors will be made full use of for theme parks and leisure centres.

As part of the Services sector, airports in the Balearics take on extra staff at this time of year to cope with the extra influx of visitors including check-in personnel, baggage handlers and receptionists at car hire offices.

In all posts said Adecco, knowledge of languages and the ability of staff to attend to customer requirements is highly valued.
A source at Adecco said that the agency is also asked to reinforce staffing levels at commercial centres in tourist resorts during the summer which includes drafting in more cashiers and shop assistants in retail outlets especially geared to appeal to seasonal visitors.

A surge in the demand for refreshments, fast food and cosmetic products related to tourism requires extra sales staff, confirmed the agency. The source said that the nature of applicants for temporary summer jobs is now much broader than it once was. Even young people who have a high level of education with knowledge of languages are coming forward, as are housewives who want to increase income in the home because of unemployment amongst family members, immigrants, people over the age of 40 and those who are unemployed but with advanced qualifications.

Adecco said that for yet another year, the number of people looking for work has grown in excess of the increase in the number of jobs available. Of the 4'744'000 people Central Government confirm are unemployed in Spain, said the source, 89'807 are in the Balearics. Many over 45s don't have unemployment benefit, Adecco said.
