Palma.—The Balearic Travel Agents Association (AVIBA) said yesterday that it could no longer finance travel for the infirm or sporting events due to the fact that the subsidies owed its members by the regional government for such purposes has exceeded all limits.

AVIBA said that although the Balearic government has issued the Association with certificates for 2011 acknowledging that subsidies are due, no communication whatsoever has reportedly been made about the amount that is going to be paid or when.

Sources at AVIBA explained that on top of the backlog for 2011, nearly six months of the present year has passed and there is still no sign of reimbursement. “It's become a situation that many of our members simply can't sustain,” AVIBA said. “The agencies just can't issue tickets indefinitely.” The Association said that the people who are really going to suffer as a result of the decision not to arrange for further travel are those who are ill. “These cases are people who don't have the economic resources to journey from their home to the medical centre where they are being offered treatment. The government subsidised these trips,” the Association explained.
