Palma.—Melia International hotels in the Balearics are currently recruiting personnel to staff the new Calvia Beach hotel development complex in Magalluf.

The first stage of the project entails the reform and integration of a number of already-existing hotels, and the creation of new leisure and “lifestyle” businesses associated with the new complex. The whole process may mean that as many as 280 new job will be on offer.

The tourist establishments to be linked up are Sol Wave House, Beach House, Sol Antillas and Sol Barbados. A “Wave House” area will be created and a Nikki Beach Club which will essentially merge leisure service facilities - restaurants, music and entertainment.

The plans by Melia International, a Majorcan company, have been declared a project in the regional interest in the context of its importance for creating employment at a time of economic crisis.

In a second phase planned over the next three to five years, the hotel chain wants to build a walkway connecting the seafront with Avenida Magalluf, and to convert outdated tourist accommodation into a so-called “condohotel” - apartments which tourists can rent serviced by central catering and sports facilities. Melia International also wants to be involved in the improvement of commercial areas and to provide conference facilities.

At all levels of the recruitment process, a Melia International spokesman said yesterday, a good level of English will be demanded, and preferably knowledge of German and Russian. “It's important to be able to meet client requirements in their own language.”
