Palma.—Adolfo Orozco Lopez, the Commander of the Balearic military said yesterday in Palma that the public should participate in the acts commemorating Armed Forces Day and spare a thought for the troops on task forces overseas, particularly peace keeping missions in Afghanistan and the Lebanon.

Speaking from his offices at the Almudaina Palace, Orozco Lopez said that “things are going well” for Balearic troops in Afghanistan, that they have plenty of work to do which makes the time go quickly and that they can be in touch on a daily basis with their families on the internet.

Orozco Lopez said that when there wasn't news of any particular nature, it meant that everything was going “according to plan”. The Commander said that although cuts in the Defence budget were being made in some resources by as much as 50%, nothing at all was being reduced in aspects of safety for serving troops. But he confirmed that cuts are already being made in the number of personnel on missions in the Lebanon and the same will apply to Afghanistan until withdrawal planned for 2014 is complete.

Meanwhile this weekend's celebrations for Armed Forces Day included a changing of the guard at the Almudaina palace by troops dressed in uniforms used during the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries. The display was attended by senior government officials including the Mayor of Palma, Mateo Isern and Central Government Delegate José María Rodríguez.

Today, there will be a repeat performance of historic uniform display at San Carlos Castle in Palma's west docks at 11.45am.
