Palma.—Users of Can Pere Antoni beach in Palma were complaining yesterday about the amount of dead seaweed left lying on the surface of the sand.
With summer not yet having officially arrived, beachgoers to Can Pere Antoni, east of Palma cathedral are mostly local residents. They acknowledge that there have been major improvements made to the beach recently including showers, a toilet, sections with sunbeds and sunshades, and lifeguard services. But few local people are happy about the amount of dead seaweed left lying around, reportedly harbouring waste material left by visitors to the beach, encouraging flies and generally giving a bad image.

The beach management company, responding to the criticism says that the seaweed is naturally produced and is “good for Can Pere Antoni beach” given that most of the expanse of sand is artificial. The weed apparently acts as a stabilising factor and helps stops sand from drifting.

However the company said they would be increasing the number of cleaning staff who sift out plastic bottles, empty wine cartons and old shoes on a daily basis.
