S'Arenal.—The so-called “balnearios” or bathing areas of the Playa de Palma are presenting a “new look” this summer after the beach management company “Mar de Mallorca” decided to spend 1.5 million euros on upgrading already-existing facilities and providing new ones .

So far, just 300'000 euros of this funding has been spent on improving the image of the part of Arenal beach which lies within the municipality of Palma. The remainder of Playa de Palma beach to the east of the city boundary, lies in the municipality of Llucmajor.

A concerted effort
Already, 1'100 sunbeds have been given new canvases; there are now different changing rooms for workers and the whole infrastructure of the bathing areas - whethere related to cleaning or services has been revitalised.

One of the most notable improvements is the redesigned layout of the balnearios. Each has been given its own colour theme for differentiation and easy identification by the tourist community. Signposting has been modernised, and benches, stairs and railings have been spruced up.

Alvaro Gijon, Tourism Councillor on Palma City Council and Managing Director of the Playa de Palma Reform Board, said yesterday. “Not only will the distinct colouring allow people to pinpoint their hotels in relation to the bathing areas, but the beach bars and cafés on the seafront are also similarly coloured and signposted. “There's now a much better choice of food and drinks on offer,” Gijon added. He explained that 100 percent of the money for investment in the bathing areas of the Playa de Palma has been provided by the private sector. Mar de Mallorca's project, he said, had been presented to Palma City Council in order to get the go ahead.

The company has been managing 15 bathing areas on the Playa de Palma since 1969.
