Madrid/Palma.—A National Institute of Statistics (INE) report released yesterday showed that there were 241'355 overnight stays made in the Balearics in April this year by people using non-hotel based accommodation - such as tourist apartments, rural inns and camping facilities.

The figure was 12.8 percent less than in the same month in 2011 and notably steeper than the decline in these alternative forms of accommodation at a national level over the same period which stood at 7.7%.

Analysing the INE data more closely, figures show that there were 30'774 visitors staying in tourist apartments in the Balearics in April this year, 15.5% less than in the same month in 2011. These people stayed a total of 180'458 nights in the apartments - 17.5% less than a year previously, the Institute claimed.

There was some good news in the rural tourism sector where the report showed that there were 12'968 visitors in the Balearics in April this year staying at inns and guest houses in country spots, 6% more than in the same month in 2011. Rural tourists stayed a total of 53'977 nights during the month, a year-on-year increase of 1.9%. Majorca is the most popular destination in Spain for rural tourism.

Although numbers of campers in the Balearics do not form a major part of tourism statistics, their numbers doubled in April this year to 1'260 visitors staying a total of 6'920 nights.
