The level of carbon dioxide emissions from cars in the Balearics during the first four months of the year was registered at 132 grammes per kilometre, within the national average, the tax ministry said yesterday.

Those contaminating the atmosphere the most were the Spanish cities of Melilla and Ceuta in North Africa with 166 and 151 grammes per kilometre respectively, followed by the Canary Islands (139); Aragon (136); and La Rioja and Catalonia (both with 135). Cantabria was the lowest (128).

The national average of 132 grammes per kilometre showed that there has been a decline in comparison with the same period in 2011 which stood at 136 grammes.
