Thousands of civil servants in the Balearics had their terms and conditions of employment altered yesterday, meaning they are now having to comply with obligations they didn't sign up to when the contract first started.

Legislation approved by the regional government will affect workers in Health and Education services, at local town councils, at the Council of Majorca and in the Balearic government itself. The “adjustments” made to the regional budget aimed at saving 80 million euros a year mean that as of next month, staff will be working longer hours, lose their “productivity” bonuses and additional holidays, and will not be able to work after retirement age.
