Palma.—Efforts by Palma's municipal cleaning service “Emaya” to set up emergency measures to cope with rubbish accumulation in the city are proving inadequate, a Council spokesman acknowledged yesterday.

Problems had set in several weeks ago when the underground pneumatic waste collection system in the city had ground to a halt due to a technical breakdown. Emaya set up emergency collection bins alongside the “out of service” pneumatic deposit points and despite extra bins having recently been added at rubbish deposit sites, it is clearly insufficient.

Meanwhile, technicians are continuing to research what caused the fault in the underground system.
