Palma/Madrid.—At a Parliamentary debate in Madrid yesterday on the National Budget, the Senate agreed to propose a request from the Balearic Islands to Congress that regional airport taxes should be lowered between November and March, given that so much of the economy depends on visitors.

Partido Popular (PP) representative in the Senate Llorenç Bosch said that he and other Balearic Senators were “very hopeful” that the proposal will be given the green light by the Upper House. He said that Congress will debate the issue during the third week in June. Bosch claimed that the move to secure lower airport taxes for the Balearics can be attributed to the personal efforts of regional President José Ramón Bauzà who for the first time has succeeded in getting Central Government recognition for the special needs of the Balearics in air transport connections rather than having a blanket tax hike imposed.

There has been much national opposition to government proposals to push up airport taxes but the government says the Airports Authority is deeply in debt after high investment in airport infrastructure.
