Palma.—Despite the lack of any aid or incentives from the Balearic government and tourism authorities, at least two British airlines have committed themselves to operating flights from the UK to Palma and Ibiza this winter.

Monarch is going to be flying four flights per week, two between Palma and Gatwick and the other two to Manchester.
And yesterday, British Airways, which had initially ruled out winter flights, announced plans to increase its flights from London City Airport to Ibiza and Majorca and operate 12 months of the year.

The routes had been summer-only destinations but the decision to increase them comes as a result of their ongoing popularity since being launched by the airline two years ago.

The off-season flights are being targeted at those with second homes in the area or those looking for some winter sun or activity and sports holidays.
BA Cityflyer's general commercial manager Luke Hayhoe said: “Leisure flying is a really important part of our business now from London City. “Winter sun breaks are a very popular market and with London City's unique 20 minute check-in time with luggage customers can leave the gloom of winter and be in the sun in less than three hours.” However, airline industry sources are not convinced with AENA's pledge to reduce airport taxes during the winter. “They are going to put them up in Palma in July, so all they will do is bring them back to normal. It's a nice PR stunt.”
