Palma.—Parliamentary leader Pere Rotger cautiously agreed yesterday with the need for MP numbers to be reduced. Rotger was responding to public suggestions by the President of the region of Madrid, Esperanza Aguirre, that the number of MPs in the regions should be reduced to help save money.

He said that although there was a need to bring down the number of MPs in the Balearics, it was a process that had to be done over a period of years. It was also important, Rotger said, to make sure that there were no areas of the Balearic Islands which ended up without representation in Central Government and that reduction was made evenly so no imbalance occurred. He added that the decision to reduce the number of MPs is up to the regional Parliaments and is a matter for cross party debate.
