Palma.—The new ring road will be the only large scale road building project to have been undertaken during the term of office of the present Balearic government.

The total cost of the works will be around the 100 million euro mark but it is only the first stage of construction which will be going out to public tender at the moment, contracts to the value of 50 million euros.

The first part of the works will affect the stretch from the Inca motorway near the Alcampo hypermarket as far as Son Ferriol in east Palma. The second phase will run between Son Ferriol and the airport. “The road will take the form of a dual carriageway with a complementary cycle lane. Sound barriers will be put up where the road runs through residential areas to minimise noise contamination,” said Territory Councillor Mauricio Rovira yesterday. The second ring road is being built to decongest traffic volume on the first ring road which supports 140'000 vehicles a day. Forecasts are that 50'000 of these will use the second ring road.

Added to this major road building project is a minor one due to start shortly. It is an access road from El Molinar to the Llevant motorway. The contract bid went out to public tender yesterday. Once they have started, works will take a year and-a-half to complete.

The President of the Council of Majorca, Maria Salom, presented the projects yesterday accompanied by the Mayor of Palma Mateo Isern. Salom said the projects had been made possible because of agreement between the Council of Majorca, Palma City Council and the Balearic government. The previous Socialist Coalition, she said, had been incapable of what she described as “practical politics.”
