Palma.—This Sunday evening, the Balearic Symphony Orchestra will be performing a free concert in the patio of Almudaina Palace and it will be accompanied by one of the world's most promising young musicians, 13-year-old pianist Anastasia Rizikov from Canada.

The concert is part of the annual Corpus celebrations and is the only time of the year when the Almudaina Palace in front of the Cathedral is open free to the public.

The concert is expected to be a wonderful evening event but it is also another opportunity for fans of the Balearic Symphony Orchestra to show their support for the musicians as they continue to fight to protect their jobs and the future of the orchestra which, according to the latest reports, appears to be in doubt again. “It's ironic. This concert is being organised by Palma City Council, the very body which is threatening to slash our budget by 32 percent and tonight, we are having to play for them,” one musician said.

It had appeared that the government had come to the rescue of the orchestra by promising to inject another half a million pounds and the orchestra in response, agreed to end its weekly free protest concerts which attracted thousands of people desperate to help save the orchestra and preserve the island's culture.

But, not everything is as cut and dried as it may have seemed so, on Sunday, enjoy some world class music and show your support for the orchestra.
